Simon and his companions were having a really bad day. These commercial fishermen had toiled all the night and wound up with empty nets. This was not a fishing trip of pleasure nor a fishing tournament, this fishing expedition was their means of supporting their families and their finances. They were expecting something and came up with nothing. Other times had produced a great harvest of fish but this time everything was a waste and a complete failure!
Have you ever had one of those days? The day started like any other and you did the same things that you have always done, but at the end of the day emptiness was in your net. Frustration, despair, disappointment, and a whole host of other emotions flood your life and your nets are still empty. We have all had those empty days. Then Jesus steps into the picture and offers a word to resolve the emptiness and the frustration enlarges itself and you think as Peter, "I have done it this way with positive results time and time again and now You want me to try again?" "What does Jesus know about my daily routines and job situations?"
Isn't it amazing that we can trust Jesus with the big stuff; the Jesus stuff, like salvation, miracles, and raising the dead but the little stuff is completely on us? This passage brings to view the fact that Jesus wants to be involved in every facet of our lives, not just the big stuff. It is not always a chariot of fire or a clap of lightning that Jesus will send, it may be a simple word; a word of instruction just to let you know he cares about your emptiness. Jesus wants our lives filled, not empty.
In your "let down" days, let down your nets one more time, Jesus can and will fill your life with His fullness!
