1Ki 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. Elijah experienced many phases in his life in a very short time. On Mount Camel, he called upon God and the fire of God fell from heaven declaring without any doubt that his God was the true and living God. He slew 850 false prophets at the brook Kishon. He prayed and God brought the very much needed rain after a 3 1/2 year drought. He was so excited he outran the chariot of Ahab to be the first to tell Jezebel all that he had done. Then his experience changed. He went from a victorious season and immediately tailspinned into a seemingly losing season. Jezebel threatened to kill him just like he had done to her prophets and now he had secluded himself, first under a juniper tree and then in a cave.
Have you ever been there? Things simply could not be any better in your season of life and then out of nowhere, a season of disaster and defeat capture your life so violently that you just feel like secluding yourself and wishing for the day! Self pity and self involvement are the highlight of your mind and you are no longer standing tall but wanting to hide from everyone including God.
These seasons are real and so important for the child of God. The Lord knew exactly where Elijah was hiding and he stepped into his cave and called him out. Elijah informed God that He had no one else to serve Him because he was the only one living for God and he was quitting! The Lord told Elijah to go stand on a mountain. He caused a wind, earthquake and a fire to present themselves before Elijah and they caused a lot of damage but the Bible says that the Lord was in none of those things. After everything settled, God sent a still small voice to the heart of Elijah.
Elijah had experienced a lot of activity and noise in his life and he needed some still time to recover. When our lives are full of motion and noise we desperately need that still time with God to refresh and revive our spirits. The journey of serving the Lord can be overwhelming at times. But God has a remedy - Himself!
With all of your activities, have you gotten your focus on the things instead of the Thing Maker? Have you lost touch with the One who can bring stillness back into your life? Jesus did say, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Quit being busy and be still. The Lord can and will come to your stillness.
Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
