Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Sin is a monster that we are all very familiar with. Our sin is the reason Jesus had to die on the cross of Calvary. Thank God for the salvation that Jesus wrought that day when He hung on the cross!
Salvation offers us the forgiveness for sin needed to bring us into fellowship and sonship with God. Nothing could ever destroy our sonship; we are eternally saved by the grace of God. After we are saved we realize that though our sins are forgiven, they are not abolished. Our old sin nature is still present and the continual war rages to become victorious over sin. When we do allow sin to reign, our fellowship with our Saviour is broken and it grieves the heart both of Jesus and his child. How then do we have victory over our sins?
#1 - Realize that there is victory for all of God's children over sin. Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. #2 - Reckon yourself dead to sin and alive unto God. Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. #3 - Resource the blood of Christ. 1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. #4 - Remove yourself from sin. Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. #5 - Rejoice in righteousness. Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
I do not mean to advocate that there is a 5 step program for victory over sin, but for the conquering of sin in our personal lives, there is action required on our part. Jesus has done His part - He died FOR our sin! We need to do our part and die TO our sin!
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
1John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
