“ Summary, Part 3 (final) ”
2. JESUS WAS DELIVERED UP TO DEATH BECAUSE OF OUR TRANSGRESSIONS [39:08]. Is 53:5-6 – Jesus was born into this world to die for sinners. His name means ‘Jehovah saves’. B. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS VALIDATED BY JESUS’ RESURRECTION [42:00]. What if Jesus had remained in the grave? “Good Friday” may have been known as “Bad Friday”, for what hopeful thing would have followed? His resurrection confirms that God has dropped all charges against the elect and that they are kept forever (cf. 2 Cor 5:21). Is 53:10 – A cross with Jesus hanging on it is blasphemy. He is risen. For whom was He delivered? For those who have the faith of Abraham. Do you have this faith?

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
II. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH TRUSTS IN THE FATHER WHO RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD (v. 24) [18:42]. Just as Abraham trusted God to make him the father of nations through his barren wife, so we trust God to raise us from death. Abraham’s test was the sacrifice of Isaac, his only son. But how could he do that to the heir of the covenant? He trusted that God would resurrect him (Heb 11:19). III. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS ESTABLISHED BY JESUS’ DEATH AND RESURRECTION (v. 25) [26:14]. In 1 Cor 15:1-7, Paul lays out the fundamental truths of the gospel and then explains their necessity to the faith. Without the truth of resurrection, there is no good news for anyone. A. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS GROUNDED IN JESUS’ DEATH [29:55]. 1. JESUS WAS DELIVERED UP TO DEATH. It was the Father who delivered the Son up to death; it was not done by men only. Acts 3:13 cannot be taken alone; Acts 2:22-23 provides the metaphysic for the physical acts of unholy men (cf. Acts 4:27-28, Rom 8:32, Gal 2:20). Men’s wicked deeds accomplished what was intended, but behind them was God’s will to bring about the means of salvation for sinners.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
For sinners, there is no more important issue than being right with God. In Rom 4, Paul explains again and again that grace, not works, is what the sinner needs. Salvation is prompted by God, not us. Abraham’s faith was a result of that prompting, not the cause, and it is the same with our own faith. I. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT (v. 23) [starting at 10:00 of the audio]. A. ABRAHAM’S JUSTIFICATION IS THE PATTERN FOR THE JUSTIFICATION OF ALL BELIEVERS. It has always been the same. A dispensational error teaches that works righteousness was the pattern of salvation before Christ. Faith has always come by hearing, and hearing has always come by the word of God. B. WHAT WE MUST BELIEVE TO BE JUSTIFIED HAS EXPANDED SINCE ABRAHAM’S DAY [15:49]. There was more revelation after Abraham (Heb 1:1-2, 2 Pet 3:2, Jude 3), and the times were not yet full regarding God’s redemptive plan. Abraham’s seed was Jesus Christ.

2. THROUGH LOVING, FATHERLY CHASTENING [39:00]. Heb 12:6, 10 – The saint bears the family name well, and he does it by holy conduct. He doesn’t rebel against God’s discipline. 3. THROUGH SUFFERING AND PERSECUTION [41:31]. Rom 8:18, 25 – Our present trials are nothing compared to our future glory. Persecution is meant for our perfection (cf. Lk 6:22-23, 26). C. GOD WILL FINALLY AND PERFECTLY SANCTIFY SAINTS WHEN CHRIST RETURNS [47:12]. 1 Thes 3:13, 5:23; 2 Thes 1:10 – Our spirits are made perfect the moment we die, but our bodies are only perfected at our resurrection at Christ’s return (1 Jn 3:2). D. GOD WILL PUBLICLY VINDICATE HIS SAINTS IN THE AGE TO COME [50:27]. 1. THEY WILL WITNESS GOD’S PUNISHMENT OF THEIR ENEMIES. Rev 18:20-19:6, 20:9 are the fulfillment of Ps 58:10-11. 2. THEY WILL BE INVITED TO THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB [55:30]. Rev 19:7-9 should humble and exhilarate us at the same time.

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
III. ENCOURAGING OBSERVATIONS FOR SAINTS [21:11]. A. GOD HAS A SPECIAL REGARD FOR HIS SAINTS. 1. GOD IS NOT ASHAMED TO OWN SAINTS AS MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY. Heb 2:8-11 – Consider the marvelous condescension of the Father and the Son for the sake of our salvation and brotherhood. We have become members of God’s family. Also ponder the certainty of our salvation (v. 11). It is a forecast of our glory. 2. GOD RESERVES A SPECIAL INHERITANCE FOR HIS SAINTS [28:39]. Eph 1:18 – Paul prays for a heart-enlightenment to our calling and to realize the object of our hope: the riches God has in store for us. This belongs to saints and only to saints. B. GOD SANCTIFIES HIS SAINTS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES [33:57]. How does He do this? 1. BY HIS SPIRIT THROUGH HIS WORD. 2 Thes 2:13 – Both are essential to our sanctification. Eph 5:25-27 – The washing of water is an emblem of the pardon of sin and the regeneration of the heart.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
We conclude part II. THE BIBLICAL DESCRIPTION OF A SAINT with G. ALL SAINTS ARE PRESUMED TO BE MEMBERS OF CHRIST’S LOCAL CHURCHES [starting at 3:49 of the audio]. Mt 28:18-20 – Christ’s command to the leaders to go and make disciples. He envisioned local churches for this task. 1. THE NEW TESTAMENT EPISTLES WERE ADDRESSED TO ASSEMBLIES OF MUTUALLY-COMMITTED SAINTS CALLED CHURCHES [7:36]. Php 1:1 – The epistle is directed to the saints, overseers, and deacons. The apostles wrote their letters to saints as members of Christ’s churches. 2. THE NEW TESTAMENT WITHOUT EXCEPTION REGARDS SAINTS AS MEMBERS OF LOCAL CHURCHES [11:14]. 1 Cor 14:33 – A proper decorum will command the behavior of the saints. Two assumptions underlie this text: that all churches are to be composed formally only of saints, and that saints are to be members of churches. 3. THE GOAL OF PASTORAL MINISTRY IS PERFECTING SAINTS AS MEMBERS OF CHRIST’S CHURCHES [14:32]. Eph 4:11-12 – Paul states as such plainly here, especially in v. 12. LESSONS [17:33]: 1. This is addressed to saints as members of local churches, not lone ranger Christians or church-hoppers. 2. Christians able to join a local church, but avoiding doing so, don’t deserve the name of saint. 3. Well-taught saints are usually healthy saints.

3. SAINTS PERSEVERE IN THEIR FAITH BEARING WITNESS OF JESUS EVEN IF IT COSTS THEM THEIR LIVES [42:31]. Rev 17:6, 18:24 – Satan is given permission for a time to kill God’s people. The Puritans understood this to manifest from paganism and Romanism, but especially from the latter. Today, we forget that the murderous spirit of Islam once characterized the church at Rome. However the future plays out, the saints will continue to be targeted until Christ returns. ENCOURAGING PROMISES [50:37]. 1. The saints will persevere until the end (Rev 14:12). 2. God will requite the blood of the saints by punishing their persecutors (cf. Rev 13:10, 16:6; 2 Thes 1:3-10).

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
1. SAINTS ARE THE OBJECT OF HATRED AND PERSECUTION INCITED BY THE EVIL ONE [24:51]. Rev 13:7 – Because Satan hates God, he is an inveterate enemy of God’s people. Paul hated the church before his own salvation; he hated seeing his fellow Jews saved into the new faith. Note four qualities of Satan’s persecution of the saints: ITS ORIGIN: it is God-given, but limited. ITS TARGET: the saints. He has the rest of the world in his hand. ITS IMPACT: he has authority from God. ITS SCOPE: worldwide, including all the nations. 2. SAINTS ARE THE OBJECT OF THE WORLD’S HATRED AND PERSECUTION [31:01]. Christ warned that we would have tribulation. A saint is separated and holy, and the world hates this because it hates his God. Jn 15:18-21 – Sinners run from the light, not to it, and will treat the saints accordingly. We cannot be friends with the world and still be friends with God. We must not take hatred from the world personally (Jn 15:18). Love from the saints and hatred from the world are both great privileges.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
We continue with F. ALL SAINTS SHOULD LIVE SUCH HOLY LIVES THAT THEY WILL BE A PERSECUTED PEOPLE [starting at 2:58 of the audio]. The Bible is clear that the Christian life is one of trials. The persecution of the saints began in the first family, within which occurred the first murder. Gen 4:3-11 – This was not the result of a sibling rivalry or even “merely a murder”, but was incited by personal jealousy prompted by religious hatred (vv. 3-4). Heb 11:4 – Abel was righteous in his offering, but Cain was not in his. Cain could have allowed himself correction, but instead chose anger and resentment. Gen 3:11-15 – The origin of rebellion. The world can be divided between Cainites and Abelites. God’s curse in the garden was not on man, for whom salvation was always available, but on Satan. He knows he is doomed and has worked hurriedly to deceive and damn everyone he can. In the garden, God declared a war between sinner and saint: a war which persists to this day, impacting everyone without exception. Men’s hatred for each other comes from their hatred for God, and it is most acute against the saints (cf. Gen 9:6, Gal 4:29). Natural man sees the things of the spirit as foolish.

“ Summary, Part 3 (final) ”
SECOND, note the recipients of the faith, the Gospel. It has been ‘delivered to the saints’. THIRD, note the uniqueness of this faith. The common salvation is the only one God offers to sinners. FOURTH, note the completeness and finality of this faith. It is once for all delivered unto the saints. There is no more revelation. FIFTH, the duty required by the recipients of the faith, the doctrine of our common salvation. It is delivered to all of us, and we must preserve it. False doctrine divides, but true doctrine unifies. In fact, ‘heresy’ comes from a word that means ‘factions’. If we refuse to contend for the purity of the faith, the result will be devastating. A false gospel is of the devil: it inoculates sinners from the saving truth. 1 Jn 2:18-19 – John speaks of people who have been presented with the truth and rejected it.

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
3. SAINTS WILL BE AN EVANGELICALLY OBEDIENT PEOPLE [19:23]. We don’t obey in order to be saved; we obey because we are saved. Lev 19:1-4, 1 Pet 1:14-16 – A holy people is a God-obeying people. Rom 6:19, 22 – Obedience to God’s law is equivalent to sanctification. Spiritual freedom results in obedience, not lawlessness. The requirement of the law is to fulfill God’s commandments (Rom 8:4). The Bible gives no credence to carnal Christians. 4. SAINTS ARE A JOYFULLY GRATEFUL, HEAVEN-BOUND PEOPLE [28:20]. Sainthood leads to heaven, and holiness leads to happiness and gratitude (Col 1:12). E. ALL SAINTS ARE OBLIGATED TO CONTEND EARNESTLY FOR THE BIBLICAL GOSPEL [33:30]. Jude 3-4 yields at least five exhortations. FIRST, consider the definition of ‘the faith’ of which Jude speaks here. It is THE faith. It is not subjective, but objective.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
We continue to study D. ALL SAINTS ARE LIBERATED FROM THE DOMINATING POWER OF THE FLESH TO LIVE LIVES CHARACTERIZED BY THE GRACES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT and move on to 2. SAINTS WILL BE A HABITUALLY PRAYING PEOPLE [starting at 2:52 of the audio]. This is distinct from ritualistic prayer and “scheduled” prayer. Saints are instinctually prayerful. Rev 5:8, 8:3 – saints are prayerful people and their prayers rise to heaven from earth. Our employment on earth is to be prayerful. A characteristically prayerless saint is a contradiction. a. SAINTS CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE FATHER [10:36]. Mt 6:9 – ‘Hallowed’ is translated from the same word that means ‘holy’. Holy children revere their holy Father. b. SAINTS CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST [13:37]. 1 Cor 1:2 – those called by God call to Him through Christ. c. SAINTS PRAY IN THE HOLY SPIRIT [15:34]. Eph 6:18 – Saints pray in the spirit for other saints. Rom 8:27 – The Spirit intercedes in our prayers and sends them to the Father according to His will. God’s will is always realized in our lives (cf. Eph 2:18).

2. SPECIFICALLY, SAINTS ARE CALLED TO A HOLY LIFE THAT EXHIBITS SEXUAL PURITY [25:41]. Sexual sin is as rampant today as it was in Paul’s day. 1 Thes 4:3-7 – God called us to sanctify and purify us. A life of sexual sin is incompatible with a life of faith. 3. SAINTS CALLED TO A HOLY LIFE ARE CONFIRMED IN HOLINESS IN THE LIFE TO COME [34:54]. Rev 22:11 – Heaven is for the holy, not the unholy. Holiness begins here, not in heaven (cf. 2 Tim 2:19). D. ALL SAINTS ARE LIBERATED FROM THE DOMINATING POWER OF THE FLESH, TO LIVE LIVES CHARACTERIZED BY THE GRACES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT [37:44]. A saint is a holy one, and he will exhibit the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:16-24). 1. SAINTS WILL BE A CHRISTIAN-LOVING PEOPLE [43:08]. Contrast Titus 3:3, what we were, with Ps 16:3, what we are now. Eph 1:15; Phlm 5, 7; 2 Cor 9:12, 13:13; Rom 16:2, 15; Heb 6:10 – passages on love for saints.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
We continue this study of the biblical description of a saint with C. ALL SAINTS ARE CALLED AND EMPOWERED BY GOD TO LIVE MORALLY PURE AND RIGHTEOUS LIVES [starting at 4:48 of the audio]. This does not mean a perfectly sinless life, which is impossible on earth. We are and continue to be consecrated. 1. SAINTS ARE CALLED TO ABANDON THEIR FORMER SINS AND TO BE HOLY, LIKE THE HOLY GOD WHO CALLED THEM [5:38]. We can glean some observations from 2 Tim 1:9, 1 Cor 1:2, and 1 Pet 1:14-16: a. Paul joins salvation with the call to a holy calling, which he in turn joins to the grace and purpose to which He has granted us in Christ: to be holy. b. Salvation and effectual calling is according to His grace and purpose, and not our works. c. Our calling and salvation are a gift granted to us in Christ before the foundation of the world, but we will live in our lives in holiness, righteousness, and in separation from the world. d. We cannot claim to be God’s children if we don’t live holy lives. 2 Tim 2:19-21 – An unsanctified person is not useful for any good works. 1 Cor 6:9-11 – Note “such WERE some of you”. Former sins do not characterize those called with the holy calling. What once characterized us does so no longer (cf. Eph 2:10). Rev 19:8 – The linen represents the saints’ righteousness.

“ Summary, Part 4 (final) ”
CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS/APPLICATIONS [50:28]. 1. Baptism possesses no saving value or power, but it wonderfully portrays the tremendous change that has taken place in those who have been saved by faith in Jesus Christ. 2. Because baptism pictures these glorious spiritual and redemptive realities, baptism should be restricted only to those who have repented of their sins and trusted in Christ for their acceptance with God. 3. The Bible’s doctrine of baptism teaches that all—and only those—who have truly repented of their sins and trusted Christ should be baptized and joined to a Biblical local church as conscientious, committed, contributing members. 4. Have you believed upon Christ and forsaken your sins? If you haven’t, your immediate and most pressing need is not to be baptized, but to repent and be forgiven of your sins. If you have repented and trusted Christ and yet have not been baptized, you are living in disobedience to Christ.

“ Summary, Part 3 ”
IV. HOW SHOULD ONE BE BAPTIZED? [42:20]. A. THE MEANING OF THE WORD ‘BAPTISM’ SIGNIFIES IMMERSION. Our word is a Greek word, and it means ‘to dip or immerse’. This rules out infant baptism, which became common when the Bible was translated into English. Cf. Jn 3:23, Acts 8:38, LBCF 29.4. B. THE SYMBOLISM OF UNION WITH CHRIST IN HIS DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION DEMANDS IMMERSION [48:22]. Rom 6:1-4 – Baptism as a burial. Col 2:12 – Again, burial and raising up. C. PURIFICATION OF HEART AND FORGIVENESS OF SINS IS BEST PICTURED BY IMMERSION [49:50]. Our sins aren’t sprinkled, but washed away.

II. WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED? [21:25] A. ADULTS WHO HAVE REPENTED OF THEIR SINS AND TRUSTED IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST FOR SALVATION SHOULD BE BAPTIZED. Acts 2:38-41 – The reference to children is that the promise is available to them as much as to “those afar off”. Acts 8:12 – Men and women denote adults. B. THOSE WHO WOULD BE ADMITTED INTO AND ENJOY ALL THE PRIVILEGES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP IN A LOCAL CHURCH SHOULD BE BAPTIZED [26:45]. Acts 2:42 – They submit to teaching and fellowship. Acts 5:14 – They went into the water with joining the church in mind. The Ethiopian eunuch is the only exception to this (Acts 8:26-40). III. WHY SHOULD ONE BE BAPTIZED? [31:44] A. TO OBEY CHRIST’S COMMAND TO HIS DISCIPLES. Mt 28:18-20 – We are baptized in obedience and into obedience. B. TO PUBLICLY PROCLAIM ONE’S FAITH IN AND ALLEGIENACE TO CHRIST [35:35]. 1 Tim 6:12 – Though baptism isn’t specifically named here, Timothy’s confession entails it. C. TO FOLLOW THE BIBLICAL PATTERN FOR ADMITTANCE INTO THE MEMBERSHIP OF CHRIST’S LOCAL CHURCHES [41:22] (cf. Acts 2:41-42).

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
We do not base our understanding of baptism upon church tradition, but up on the Bible alone (LBCF 1.1). I. WHAT IS TAUGHT BY BAPTISM? [starting at 2:40 of the audio]. Baptism pictures a person’s union or identification with someone in leadership over himself (cf. 1 Cor 10:2, 1:13-16; Mt 28:19). A. BAPTISM SYMBOLIZES UNION WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IN HIS DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION [5:35]. Rom 6:3-5 – Our union with Christ in His death and resurrection. Col 2:12 – Our union in His death. Gal 3:27 – We are clothed with Him. B. BAPTISM PORTRAYS THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS [8:56]. It doesn’t confer this forgiveness (God already did that), but symbolizes it. 1 Pet 3:21 – Physical water does not wash away spiritual stains. Mk 1:4, Acts 2:38 – It pictures forgiveness. Acts 22:16 – Salvation comes when we call upon the name of Christ. C. BAPTISM PICTURES MORAL CLEANSING AND HEART PURIFICATION [16:06]. Rom 6:4 – It represents something effectual; our newness of life in Christ. Col 2:11 – It is also a picture of this new life.

“ Summary, Part 3 (final) ”
c. Saints are sanctified by God the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 6:11 – The Father is the architect, the Son is the redeemer, and the Holy Spirit is the applier of sanctification. 2. ALL SAINTS ARE SANCTIFIED BY FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD [45:17]. Our eyes are opened the moment we are saved (Acts 26:18, 15:9; cf. 1 Pet 1:22). 3. ALL SAINTS ARE SANCTIFIED BY THE WORD OF GOD [48:06]. Eph 5:25-27 – God sanctifies His church corporately and individually (cf. Jn 17:17, 19). 4. ALL SAINTS ARE SANCTIFIED AS THEY LIVE IN THE FEAR OF GOD [52:03]. They do this in two ways: with humble gratitude for all of God’s promises in Christ, and while continually cleansing themselves of all moral defilement and spiritual uncleanness. 2 Cor 6:14-7:1 – God dwells among them. Remember that holiness is separation and consecration. Without this fear, faith becomes careless and flippant. CONCLUDING APPLICATIONS [59:02]: 1. If you are a true Christian, you are a saint who’s being sanctified by God. 2. If you would be further sanctified, you must apply the means of grace. 3. If you would become a saint, you must believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ.

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
II. THE BIBLICAL DESCRIPTION OF A SAINT [22:36]. Positionally, Christians are perfectly holy positionally (definitive), but practically are imperfectly holy (progressive). It is crucial for the Christian to include both in his personal introspection. If he loses sight of his definitive sanctification, his ongoing sin will cause him to doubt his salvation; without progressive sanctification, his assurance will rest in the moment of salvation and his sin will go unchecked. Doctrine matters. A. ALL CHRISTIANS (AND ONLY CHRISTIANS) ARE SAINTS) [26:02]. A saint is not a “super-Christian”, but a Christian. The Roman Catholic idea of venerated saints is false. The Bible calls all Christians saints (cf. Rom 1:7, 1 Cor 1:2). We become saints by divine effectual calling. This excludes all members of all other religions. Who doesn’t know the Son doesn’t know the Father (1 Jn 2:23). There is no such thing as a pagan saint. B. ALL SAINTS ARE SANCTIFIED BY THE SAME SACRED MEANS [37:12]. 1. ALL SAINTS ARE SANCTIFIED BY THEIR UNION AND COMMUNION WITH THE TRIUNE GOD (Lev 22:32). a. Saints are sanctified by God the Father (1 Thes 5:23). b. Saints are sanctified by God the Son. Heb 2:11, 10:10, 13:12, 1 Cor 1:30 – Christ isn’t ashamed to call us brethren.
