233 years ago, a body of men representing what would become the United States of America declared their independence from Britain. But those brave visionaries recognized that even as they declared themselves independent of the king of England, they were in fact DEpendent upon the sovereign of the universe. Franklin, calling the body to prayer, said, "If not a sparrow falls without our Father, is it possible for a nation to rise without His aid?" John Adams said "I am apt to believe that this day (the fourth of July) will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God almighty." Of course the 4th of July IS celebrated, but not so much with "solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty," as Adams recommended. In fact, it is a tragic irony of history that many of the things proposed or enacted by our founders would, if proposed or enacted today, be assumed to be unconstitutional. We are moving from a nation of men and women who declared, individually and corporately, our utter dependence upon God, to one where we are declaring, individually and corporately, our independence FROM God.
