The concept of the Kingdom is widespread in both the Old & New Testaments of the Bible. The Bible does not say we are in the Kingdom. The Bible does not say the Church is to build the Kingdom. The Bible does not say the Church is the Kingdom.
Confusion is growing concerning what the Church is, what is its responsibility to society, and what the Bible teaches about building the Kingdom.
Our 'Christian society' is placing a strong, yet unbiblical, emphasis on the Church in terms of it building the Kingdom. Heavily promoted, world-wide plans to improve society, unify the world and build the kingdom sound like good ideas, but they are not responsibilities God has given the Church, hence He has not given the Church the means to do so.
One danger when churches adopt these plans is the need to compromise biblical truth to work in harmony with others who do not share the same belief in the Bible as the Word of God. With this kind of mix, the Gospel and mission of the Church as comissioned by Christ, is nullified.
Key prinicples for a biblical understanding include: 1. Keeping Israel & the Church distinct. 2. Jesus in the Gospels is a continuance of God's program with Israel (the Jews). He lived under the Mosaic Law until His resurrection. 3. The promised Davidic Kingdom has not been established. Christ is not sitting on David's throne. Spiritualizing leads to inaccuracy. 4. Ministry responsibilities differ between the Church and the individual believer.
