The Da Vinci Code contends that the royal blood of Christ was passed down through the lineage of Dagobert II, the last Merovingian king (late 600s). The descendants of his son, Sigisbert, “included Godefroi de Bouillon—founder of the Priory of Sion.” According to Langdon, Godefroi de Bouillon “ordered the Knights Templar to recover the Sangreal documents from beneath Solomon’s Temple and thus provide the Merovingians proof of their hereditary ties to Jesus Christ.” (DVC p.258). • Dan Brown has borrowed this assertion straight out of Holy Blood, Holy Grail. Medievalist D.L. d’Avery, from the History Department of the University College, London, called this Merovingian–Godefroi theory “amiable lunacy.” He added, “I have consulted a good specialist in the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. she told me that she could find no evidence of the survival of the Merovingian line ... . [Y]ou would be on safe ground in assuming that the Merovingian line is of no historical importance after the eighth century.” • Also, the whole theory of Christ’s bloodline through the Merovingian kings via Dagobert II relies on a most dubious event – the alleged marriage between Dagobert and a Giselle de Razès, daughter of the Count of Razes. The problem is: “Giselle de Razès never existed. I mean, pretty much everybody in France, at least, if not in Europe, North America etc must be "grand, grand ... grandchildren" of these Merovingians. If you don't believe me try calculating it (let's say that every genereation had two children who made two children of their own and so on for about 50 generations, 1500 years). Of course grandchildren married each other on the way, but still the number must be mind-boggling.
