WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE?
By Henry Mahan
If a person has concern and doubts about his hope of grace and eternal glory, he might consider the following questions.
1. God requires perfection. Am I perfect? No! Then do I have ONE who is perfect to stand for me, and I in Him?
2. Do I have a righteousness that can stand the test of God's holy law and presence? No! Then is there ONE who will give to me such holiness?
3. Will God hear my weak and sinful voice before His throne? No! Then is there ONE He will hear who shall be my advocate and intercessor?
4. Do I have an acceptable blood atonement and can I act as a suitable high priest before His presence? No! Then do I have ONE who is a great High Priest in the heavens with one sacrifice for sins forever?
5. The scriptures declare, "He that hath clean hands, a pure heart, who hath not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully" shall stand in His holy place. Can this be said of me? No! Then do I have ONE in whom all the fullness of holiness, power, and truth dwells who will love me, take my case as His, and bring me to God?
"Yes, there's ONE, only ONE,
The blessed, blessed Jesus, He's the ONE:
When afflictions press the soul,
And waves of trouble roll,
And you need a friend to help you,
HE'S THE ONE!"
AN ILLUSTRATION: If a bio of you is to be published, if it is within your power to do so, you see to it that it is published correctly. You make sure all the information is included and nothing erroneous is added. You do it because your name is behind it. When it is published the first thing you do is to read it and make sure all the information was published the way you sent it to be published. You do it because your name is behind it.
The name of the thrice holy God is behind all his work. He has the power, and for the sake of his holy name, he sends forth his word in truth and in spirit, and it always accomplishes his purpose.
AMAZING GRACE: Isaiah 29: 13: Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:...Amazing Grace takes sinners just like the ones described here, shuts their mouths, gives them a heart which draws near to God, a desire for God alone to have the honor, and causes them to hate the terrifying commandments of men which they once thought was true godliness.
WHAT IS REPENTANCE? Philippians 3: 7: But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8: Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,...
IF YOUR SIGHT IS YOUR OWN THEN YOU ARE BLIND: Isaiah 6: 9: And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Isaiah was sent of God because he was God's man, God's prophet. Isaiah was sent to declare God's word to the people. This is what God would have Isaiah declare.
Ye hear, without ceasing, but you do not discern what you hear. Ye see, without ceasing, but you do not acknowledge what you see. They had the Law of Moses; they had the priests and the temple; God sent his prophets to them; therefore the Lord says to Isaiah, "They hear continually. They see continually. But they will not heed me." Who is as blind as the sinner who can not behold Christ because he is enamored with his own religious devotions? (Isa 42: 18-20.)
Hearing with the natural ear and seeing with the natural eye does not equal true faith in Christ. Proof is, until we are irresistibly drawn to Christ through the Holy Spirit, even though a sinner hears this solemn truth and does not understand, still the sinner will not ask God. When God makes us to know in our heart what God is saying then we come to God no other way but in his mercy!
ANNOUNCEMENT: This coming week, we will meet on Tuesday night (Nov 25th) at our regular time and place, instead of Thursday.
