BLOG ON: SERMON 5 Things Sinners Must Have
Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, NJ
Clay Curtis
Isaiah 6: 4: And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5: Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

Sinner's must be made willing by God to confess what we are. Isaiah did. He said, "Woe is me! For I am undone." He confessed not merely that he had sinned but that sin is all he could say he was. "I am a man of unclean lips" because from the polluted fountain of the heart the mouth speaks. Isaiah confessed that there was no help to be found in any man when he said, "I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips."

When was it that Isaiah confessed this about himself? Only when he beheld the glory of God in the face of Christ Jesus, for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts (v5.) It is clearly evident when a man has not beheld Christ's glory because the man who has not still thinks highly enough of himself and of other men that he speaks as if man can help himself. Not Isaiah; not Job. When Job was brought to behold Christ the King his confession was very much the same as Isaiah's. Job said, Job 42: 5: I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. 6: Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

Without this revelation of Christ high and lifted up, a man may look to the law and truly believe of himself, "As touching the law blameless." He may look to other men and sincerely say, "I thank thee that I am not like other men." But when the Holy Spirit reveals Christ the King then he bows in subjection. When sinner's are made to behold Christ the LORD, the LORD of the armies of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth then we behold ourselves as nothing. By his grace, this acknowledgment and confession of what we are in this flesh, continues to be our confession: 1 Timothy 1:15: This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I (not was, but) am chief.

Have your eyes seen the King? What do you think of yourself, now?
