CALL TO WORSHIP
Compared with Christ, in all beside
No beauty can I see.
The one thing needful, dearest Lord
Is to be one with thee.
The sense of Thy redeeming love
Into my soul convey.
Thyself bestow, for Thee alone
My all in all, I pray.
Less than Thyself will not suffice
My comfort to restore.
More than Thyself I can not crave
And Thou cans’t give no more.
Loved of my God, for Him again
With love intense I’d burn.
Chosen of Thee ere time began
I’d choose Thee in return.
(Tune: “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” p. 10)

ELECTING LOVE
The natural man hates the truth of divine election because the natural man does not want to be dependent on God to choose him. The spiritually dead still think they have the ability to choose God if they want. This cannot be further from the truth. All men died in Adam so that we are not capable of choosing God, loving God, or choosing to be saved on God’s terms. The only hope of salvation that a dead sinner has is that God would choose to save him even though he doesn’t deserve it or desire it.
The other reason the natural man hates the truth of divine election is because false prophets tell us that election means that God choose some men to heaven and some men to hell. Again, this cannot be further from the truth. The only thing God has to do to send a man to hell is leave him to his own way. Sinners will naturally go to hell if left to their own sinful choices and their own devices. The truth of election is found in electing love. The holy God has the capacity to love sinners and to choose to save them. God does not choose to save sinners because of any good found in them (because there isn’t any good in them). God chose to save sinners because God is good. One of the greatest displays of God’s love and goodness is that God would choose to save sinners. “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”(Romans 9:13)
Pastor
If the gospel we believe is not offensive to the flesh, we do not believe THE gospel. The gospel is offensive to the flesh because it takes all glory away from the flesh by declaring all of salvation to be dependent on God’s sovereign grace alone. But if our actions and attitudes are offensive to others, we show that our hearts have not been softened and made new by God’s grace.

A Faith Untried is Unproven
The heat from a fiery trial will not leave the heart unchanged. The lasting effects of that fire will be determined by the nature of the heart. Like the effects of the noonday sun, hearts of wax will be melted, while hearts of clay will be hardened. The questions and confusions that naturally come to the heart and mind in a time of great trouble will cause some to accuse God of wrongdoing. They will become disillusioned, and some will use it as an excuse to justify their unbelief. Other hearts will be greatly softened. They will be strengthened in their faith. They will see more clearly their need for a sovereign, omnipotent, and loving Savior to keep them. They will draw nearer to the throne of grace to find help in their time of need. This is a work of sovereign grace. David, a man after God’s own heart, after having been confronted by God for taking another man’s wife and having that innocent man killed, wrote; “Create in me a clean heart, oh God; and renew a right spirit within me”. Ps 51:10.

“Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness!” - Isaiah 41:10
God has arranged all our concerns with consummate wisdom, in the very best possible manner. He overrules all events by His omnipotent power. He directs all things by His paternal love. If infinite wisdom, omnipotent power, and paternal love, are engaged for our present and eternal welfare – then our fears must be groundless, and our anxiety folly. Our fears only dishonor God, distress the mind, please Satan, and grieve the godly.
