CALL TO WORSHIP
Come sing aloud the Father’s grace
And praise the Savior’s love;
Soon shall we sing this glorious theme
In clearer tones above.
Thanks to our God for every gift
His gracious hands bestow;
And thanks for that eternal love
Whence all these blessings flow.
Forever let my grateful heart
His boundless grace adore,
Which gives ten thousand blessings now
And bids me hope for more.
(Tune: “O God Our Help In Ages Past” p. 10)

WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE
The believer has been saved from the condemning power of sin. Sin cannot damn anyone for whom Christ died. Yet the believer is not casual about his own sin. The believer does not deny his sin, but rather confesses it. The believer has been given a new, holy nature that cannot sin and that nature hates sin. The believer wishes he would never sin again. However, the believer still does nothing but sin because the old man is alive and well in him.
When we sin, the believer’s only comfort is looking to and trusting in Christ our Savior. I John 2:1 says “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Notice John does not say that if any man sin, the Lord will punish him. John does not say if any man sin, the Lord will not bless him. John does not say if any man sin, he will lose his salvation. John says “if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” The believer has an advocate, the Lord Jesus Christ who pleads His blood as the atonement for the sin of His people. No one can be condemned if Christ pleads His precious blood for them (Rom. 8:34). The only place the believer can find rest from a guilty conscience is in Christ our Savior, our sacrifice, and our advocate.

Speaking of the Holy Spirit, our Lord tells us: “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” (John 16:14). The Holy Spirit does not speak of himself, but Christ. He glorifies our Lord and Savior in the hearts of his people. The Spirit takes the things of Christ, declared in the gospel, and he shows them unto his child in the New Man, born of the Spirit by Regeneration. If your eyes are set upon this flesh for righteousness, then it’s not the Holy Spirit.

What God Has Said to Us in His Word
“Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”
What is it to call on the Name of the Lord? It is to call on the Lord Jesus Christ for all of our salvation, start to finish! “Call His Name Jesus: for HE shall save His people from their sins” (Mat 1:21). To call upon Him for salvation is to call upon HIM and NOT my religion. It is to call upon HIM, and NOT my devotion as a Christian. It is to call upon HIM, and NOT my good, moral obedience to the law. It is to call on HIS will and purpose in ALL things, and NOT my will or decision in anything! It is to say: “I can’t save myself, YOU must save me! This is not in my hands, this is in YOUR hands alone! I plead YOUR finished work! I beg for YOUR abundant grace and mercy, through the shedding of YOUR own blood!” It is to believe in the heart: “Lord, I can’t even call on You unless You call on me first.” That is calling upon the Name of the Lord. And the word of promise to us from our Lord is, “Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Pastor Gabe Stalnaker
Rebekah fell in love with Isaac and desired to be his wife before ever meeting him. How so? By believing the words of Abraham’s servant concerning him. Sinner, if you are ever to fall in love with God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, it will be by the words of God’s servant to you concerning Him. “It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21)
