CALL TO WORSHIP
‘Tis not by works of righteousness
Which our own hands have done
But we are saved by sovereign grace
Abounding through the Son.
‘Tis from the mercy of our God
That all our hopes begin
‘Tis by the water and the blood
Our souls are washed from sin.
‘Tis through the merits of His death
Who hung upon the tree
The Spirit is sent down to breathe
On such dry bones as we.
Raised from the dead, we live anew
And justified by grace
We shall appear in glory too
And see our Father’s face.
(Tune: “O God Our Help” p. 10)

FAITH MUST BE TRIED
Faith must be tried because the only way faith can be proven to be true, saving faith in Christ alone is by the trying of our faith. A few years ago a new bridge was built very near my house. When the bridge was nearly completed, I noticed how much testing they did on the bridge. I assume they were testing the concrete and steel of the bridge to make sure it would always handle the volume of the traffic that would be going over it. I felt much safer crossing that bridge after I saw all of the testing that had been done on it. Surely that bridge would hold me too.
In the same way faith must be tried. The trial will be painful for the flesh, but the only way I can know that my house is built on Christ the solid Rock is if my house still stands after the Lord sends strong storms and high waters. The only way I can know that I am not a stony ground hearer is if I still trust Christ during the heat of the day. If I am still trusting Christ alone while I am in the midst of the fiery furnace, then I know that my faith and trust in Christ is genuine. (I Peter 1:7)

Comfort In Trouble
Being a believer in Jesus Christ and resting in His good providence does not exempt us from trouble, trial, sorrow and heartache in this life. Our Lord said, "In this world you shall have tribulation.” (John 16:33) But here is our comfort and help, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) Our blessed Lord said, "Come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Our gracious God has promised wisdom to understand the trial. (James 1:5) Grace to endure and bear the trial. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Faith to trust and believe God through the trial. (Romans 4:19-20) Peace to rest in His purpose, knowing that this trial works to our eternal good (Romans 8:28-35). Hope to rejoice in our Lord and Saviour, Who said, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5) Surely, we must conclude that we are needy and sinful creatures and that the Lord Jesus Christ is our only resource of help and hope! (Philippians 4:19).

Knowing God
How much religion, tradition, and ceremony can a man know and observe and yet not know God? Well, the Jews observed thousands of Passovers yet never saw CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER. They slew thousands of lambs yet never saw CHRIST, THE LAMB OF GOD. They kept thousands of sabbaths yet never knew the rest of CHRIST, OUR SABBATH. They ordained thousands of priests yet never saw CHRIST, THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST. They actually carried the mercy-seat on their shoulders yet never came to CHRIST, OUR MERCY-SEAT. They ate the manna and drank from that Rock, yet never tasted the BREAD AND WATER OF LIFE – CHRIST JESUS. Oh, Lord, open my eyes to see HIM who is all and in all!
Henry Mahan
Even death itself is a part of the inheritance of God’s dear children, for by that means the Lord God brings his chosen home to himself. Death to a believer is a happy home going.
