John UK, I would not put up a sign at church saying “All welcome,” and I’ll tell you why. One man comes to our church about once a year, and he roams all over the sanctuary talking loudly, arguing with people and disrupting the service; clearly this is not done “decently and in order.” Every time he shows up, we have to ask him to leave, and some local churches have gone so far as to have him arrested for trespassing. I know there are those who will say, “You ought to let him come! Maybe he’ll get saved.” Yes, and maybe he’ll distract someone else who might have gotten saved if he hadn’t drawn their attention away from the preaching. We often have homeless people in our services. In fact we had one a couple of nights ago, and I could smell him ten yards away. I went over and welcomed him to the church, and told him I was glad he came—and I was. He sat quietly through a portion of the service and then left, which is something homeless people do often. “All” are not welcome. But all who are willing to show respect for others are. That’s where our church draws the line, and I don’t think it’s an unreasonable line to draw. |
