Spanking: A Potential Tool for Legalism While the passages about the rod (šēḇeṭ שֵׁבֶט) such as Proverbs 13:24, Proverbs 22:15, Proverbs 23:13-14, and Proverbs 29:15 do require us to discipline children, many legalists take these passages about the rod in Proverbs out of context to support their legalistic view of repetitively spanking people to the point of "breaking their wills". It is important for us to understand that the rod spoken of in Proverbs 13:24, Proverbs 22:15, Proverbs 23:13-14, and Proverbs 29:15 is an instrument of discipline so that we do not abuse those under our care with it as legalists have done. Of course, these self-righteous legalists think that being sadistic is a sign of "toughness", while viewing gentleness as a sign of "weakness." Through adequate discipline with the rod, we can clearly see that gentleness is indeed a sign of marvelous power.
Convicting and helpful Thank you Pastor Knapp for your faithful preaching. As a preacher, I was convicted by it and much encouraged to deal with personal and church sins. God bless the church over which the Lord has made you an overseer.
Truth Spoken Curtis Knapp is well informed and discerning and warns Christians to not
fall for delusion. Curtis is a Lion!
He cares for his flock! Spot on from start to finish. Thanks!
Thank you! I have been feeling lonely lately and found this sermon. It helped so much. I went through a long health journey (over now) that loosened my grip on this world and deepened my faith, and I find people don’t seem to want to be friends with me as much, even though I think I am kind and gracious and I think I act the same. I have been wondering what turns them off from wanting to be closer friends with me! I was always popular as a teenager. This made me feel much better.
Thanks for this. Sometimes those of us struggling with the messengers of Satan need a little affirmation that keeping up the struggle is what God wants of us. So many Christians are walking wounded, and yet still in contact with the enemy. Thank you for this sermon, I hope it edifies all who hear it as it did me.
Plain Truth No Poly Want A Cracker Preaching Here. And finally a preacher who presents Total Depravity as a Biblical Doctrine/God’s Doctrine and not Man’s Doctrine/Calvin’s Doctrine. I’m paraphrasing the Preacher as follows, please feel free to correct me if my paraphrase is incorrect … At one point he says who cares what John Calvin says, I respect him as a reformer but I want to know what God says and I’ve proven Total Depravity by quoting only scripture and didn’t quote John Calvin once. This doctrine pre-dates John Calvin and the Reformation by Eternity.
