Theme: King Jesus enters His temple to restore true worship. In vv. 45-46, Jesus cleanses the temple. The high priests were charging an exorbitant amount for the convenience of purchasing the animals for sacrifice in the temple. Secondly, the moneychangers were overcharging to make a gross profit off of people who were coming to meet God. Thirdly, the intent and purpose for the house of God was not being met because of the other things going on in it. It was to be a house of prayer, and through the practices going on, this was impossible. Jesus tells them they have made His house a den of robbers. This comes from the prophet Jeremiah, when he condemns the people for being idolatrous and then going to the temple to worship. We are called to be holy in our worship and in our practice. In application, we need to be diligent to practice God's truth. In vv. 47-48, Jesus teaches in the temple. The people were hanging on His words. We also should focus our hearts to hear God's truth. When we come to worship God, do we simply go to be entertained or because it is tradition or do we prepare our hearts to hear God's Word? Jesus is the King. He has the authority. Let us be people who are not only ready to hear Christ's Word and practice it, but are eager to do so, people who worship Christ in Spirit and in truth!
