“To elect” simply means “to select or choose.” Elect means to select or choose – which necessarily means some will not be chosen (Election and Reprobation).
Election is God’s work in choosing undeserving sinners. Reprobation is God leaving men to their own sin and depravity.
II. Three Prominent Words Used to Describe this Doctrine
IV. Examples of Election David, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Esau
Moses and Pharaoh – Exodus 9:13-16 The Nation of Israel – Deuteronomy 10:12-15; 7:7-8 Christians – 1 Peter 2:9-10
V. Election is not Salvation Election (which is a secret decree until applied by the Spirit) assures salvation to the elect.
The Father elects all who will be saved – eternity past (time is not involved).
The Lord Jesus Christ – in the purposes of God before the foundation of the world – comes into time and through His death and resurrection – redeems those given to Him by His Father.
The Holy Spirit – in the lifetime of the elect one – applies the redemption purchased by Christ.
Election is a subset of God’s absolute sovereignty.
