Jews and Gentiles had responded to the Gospel preached by Paul and Barnabas by believing and begging for more teaching. The new believers were urged to continue to live out their profession of faith by the grace of God. They strongly exhorted them to stand firm against the pressure to turn back to a works based righteousness under the Law that was coming from the Jews.
Those Jews not receptive to the Gospel reacted with jealousy by contradicting the apostle's teaching. Having been confronted with the Gospel and rejected it they brought judgment on themselves and gave up all hope for eternal life.
By this time in the early church the Gospel is predominantly being believed by Gentiles and rejected by Jews. Paul states that he sees his ministry as carrying forward the Messiah's work as he brought the light of the Gospel to the Gentiles in their spiritual darkness.
