John wrote this text 50-60 years after it happened and therefore vs. 16-17 is a summary of his entire life experience with Jesus Christ. It started with his call as a disciple and ended with his exile on the Isle of Patmos. John is now writing this as an older man and he looks back and it is as if he has to search for words to express his gratitude for the faithfulness, fullness and grace of Jesus Christ. The genuine possession of grace will always produce the character of ever increasing grace. Collectively the grace of Jesus Christ will produce a community of grace. This is what the church ought to be and is the identifying mark of a true church.
