Jesus has made it clear that the standard of righteousness God requires for those who will enter the kingdom is perfection. Sin mars that perfection in every person defiling the heart and the mind.
Jesus used common examples to illustrate that what is the matter, as concerns the source of sin, is the heart. Using the act of murder, God knows that it begins with hate in the heart, not love as should be. That hate, even when not carried to the extreme of murder, is still sin before God.
Jesus also taught that worship is worthless if there is an offense that has been committed without confessing and repenting of it. He made the fact clear that God will not accept our worship when we have not dealt with sin in our heart.
He then addressed the issue of adultery pointing out that it too begins in the heart. Lusting in the heart even if the act of adultery is not fully carried out is still sin before God.
God's view on marriage and divorce remains unchanged despite the opinions of society or culture.
The heart is the matter as concerns all sin and must be dealt with immediately by removing all excuses. Before God there are none that will lessen responsibility or remove the guilt.
