Theme: Believers should always possess a heart attitude of humility before God and all people. In v. 9, Luke tells us the target audience, those who trusted in themselves for righteousness. Self-righteousness is very rampant in the human heart, and in application, we need to ask God to search our hearts. In vv. 10-13, Jesus gives the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector. The Pharisee praises himself for all he has done, as he compared himself to others instead of God. The tax collector pleads to God for mercy and to make atonement for his sins. We see in this example that we must trust solely on God's mercy. Jesus gives the application in v. 14, saying everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. We need to live humbly with all people and before God.
