After a brief mention of the judgeship of Tola and Jair, the biblical account of the time of the judges picks up with Jephthah. The Ammonites are bringing great affliction on the sons of Israel who are living in the land of the Amorites located on the east side of the Jordan River. There has been an 18 year period of judgment from God by their being under the oppression this people. Once again it takes oppressing trouble for Israel to be desperate enough to stir them to cry out to the Lord.
God sovereignly moves among the ungodly Ammonites to set the stage for God to deliver the people.
Israel's next deliverer is introduced with details of his family background and strong reputation as a gallant warrior.
Jephthah's attempt at diplomacy failed as God will bring judgment on the Ammonites.
In making a declaration of his confidence that victory will only be by means the Lord supplies, he makes a vow to offer in sacrifice whatever comes out of the door of his house when he returns.
The Lord gives the victory and when he returns home - what comes out of his house that he has vowed to give in sacrifice to the Lord but his only child, his daughter.
Two possibilites are discussed concerning what he did to fulfill this vow.
