Paul rebukes the church for allowing themselves to be deceived. He had taught them the message of truth from God. With that they were equipped to recognized and identify false teachers and their teaching. A series of willful foolish choices by the church had put them in the vulnerable position of allowing themselves to become more enamored by physical appearance and personality than the truth of God’s word. By turning their back on the true messenger of God they were in effect turning their back on their message which was the very word of God. To alter the message of the only means of deliverance from hell condemns the proclaimer of the corrupted message along with the hearers to hell. Such dire and deadly consequences were the motive for the blunt and strong rebuke from Paul to the church at Corinth. Such deceptions are still taking place in the church of God. Having the Word of God makes leaders and laity equipped to be discerning and responsible for choices regarding teachers and the content of their teaching. All claims of prophets and apostles today are easily recognized as false by the very requirements of such offices clearly given in the Scriptures. Those making such claims of holding those positions are self-appointed and not genuine ministers to the church today.
