What becomes apparent from Christ's evaluation of the seven churches He selected is that being "lukewarm" is the most offensive to Him. Those who are "lukewarm" profess to be believers but have no real life or relationship with Him. Those in this condition made up the majority population of the church at Laodicea. So serious was their condition was that He evaluated them as being "dead," having no sensitivity to their condition.
Amazingly, despite the church as a whole being repulsive to Him, He closed His message to them declaring His friendship and affectionate love for the true church in their midst.
His rebuke and condemnation were spoken out of love as He called them to become hot - zealous, by repenting.
Christ described Himself as knocking on the door implying the urgency and imminence of His second coming. Believers will be ready to receive Him, “open the door,” and welcome Him when He returns to set up His Kingdom.
Those who do not repent will be excluded from the Kingdom to come and from enjoying life in Christ's presence.
