The last church to be addressed by Christ may be the most well known because of the serious problems it had. Along with the church at Sardis, it receives no words of commendation.
Christ immediately draws attention to their condition by stating that they are totally revolting to Him. Repulsive to the extent He wants to be rid of them. He has found their majority to be professing Christians only which He describes as "lukewarm." At most, there remained only a small minority of genuine believers. As a whole they are not genuine believers, but pretenders who do all the necessary deeds to "look" the part. They have been exposed to the Word of God but never genuinely believed it and been born again. This exposure had become dangerous for them as they were increasingly hardened to the Truth. Compounding the danger was the fact of their having been around genuine believers who comprised this church at its birth, they had learned how to play the part of "acting" like Christians. In their delusion, this church that thought it was the best, is deemed by Christ as being in the worst condition, receiving the harshest evaluation.
Even so, Christ graciously told them how to correct their condition and "purchase" by their faith in Him, the salvation they needed.
