The Psalmist was in despair. He admitted it. He was in frequent tears because of the oppression of the wicked. They kept taunting him with the question: "Where is your God?" It would have been easier to deal with except for the fact that he himself wondered the same thing. He felt abandoned by God. The psalm teaches that not only is it normal for godly men and women to feel this way, but it also teaches us the solution to our depression. We must learn to preach the truth to our own souls: "Why are you in despair, O my soul. Hope in God!"
