Job is book is about the trials of one individual and his interaction with his friends. It is about abandonment of others who should be close to him. However, his friends in the first cycle discourse have said it was Job's sin that has caused his suffering. There would be no suffering in the world if it weren't for original sin, but this isn't what is causing Job's suffering. They have argued that personal suffering is caused by personal sin. Job is adamant that he has not be guilty of sin. He is not saying he is sinless. He has not be in rebellion against for which God would chasten him. Rejecting his friends' counsel is the height of irreverence to God, as far as they are concerned. They are hardened in their settled convictions. Their mixture of truth and error is bad theology. Misapplied truth is a falsehood. In the confines of this life, things don't shake out as they should, but there is a final retribution in heaven and hell.
