The second beast, the false prophet who has come on the scene at the mid-point of the seven year tribulation, directs the worship of the world to the first beast, the antichrist. As a part of that false worship system the false prophet gives instruction for the building of an “image of the beast”.
Through the second beast, the false prophet, Satan exercises worldwide control over all religious activity, economies, and governments. Every person will then be required to receive a “mark” that identifies them as a worshiper of the beast. It is an irrevocable decision that allows for no repentance. All who receive the mark will in effect seal their eternal destiny as hell.
This “mark of the beast” will be the necessary means for people to carry on “normal” life activities such as buying and selling goods. The counterfeit system this created being is able to put into place will be amazing. Since this man will have the greatest charisma and the greatest power the world has ever seen, commitment to him is compelling for the unbeliever. The number identified with him in Scripture continues to be intriguing even as the sequence of world events is advancing God's program today.
