Theme: God is sovereign and man is responsible to believe the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection of which all Scripture testifies. In vv. 13-24, we see Jesus' conversation with the disciples. They explain their sadness and confusion at the recent events, yet do not recognize that it is Jesus with whom they are speaking. In vv. 25-27, we see Jesus' rebuke and teaching with the disciples; they were foolish and slow of heart to believe the Word of God. Jesus explained to them from the Scriptures how all things were written about Him. In vv. 28-32, we read of Jesus' meal with the disciples, and in vv. 33-35 the disciples testify of Jesus' resurrection vv. 33-35. In application, we need to recognize the nearness of Jesus and consider His promises to always be with us, as well as the giving of the Holy Spirit. Secondly, we need to heal our feelings with truth. Either our feelings will dictate what we believe, or we will allow truth to inform our feelings. Finally, we need to see the impact of encountering the risen Jesus. When we encounter the resurrected Lord, He gives us new purpose and new life.
