Paul warns that there will be those who advocate a different doctrine than what he is delivering and what is in accordance with Christ and with godliness. He has no tolerance for different doctrine, because all things not consistent with Christ are heretical and false. The context is submission and Paul seems to have in view those who would advocate a different doctrine than the doctrine of submission to authority, as was commanded in verses 1-2 with respect to slaves and masters. Submission is not an optional thing or an optional doctrine. It is straightforward. It is simple. It is black and white. It is not nearly so "complex" as certain troublemakers would have us believe. There are rebellious people, Paul says, who make their way into churches and they advocate a different doctrine. They show a morbid interest in controversial questions. They like to dispute and quarrel about words and their use and their meaning. They are conceited, deprived of the truth, depraved of mind and they bring a host of foul problems with them into the church if they are humored. Church be warned.
