Paul speaks about and condemns those who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. He then talks about the love of money and it being the root of every kind of evil. This describes the prosperity preacher charlatans of our day. Joel Osteen. Kenneth Copeland. Creflo Dollar. Joyce Meyer. Jesse Duplantis. Benny Hinn. All these and more are greedy for money and they are worth millions upon millions of dollars, which they "earned" illicitly by swindling it out of the unstable souls who listen to them. Paul describes such "prophets" as depraved of mind and deprived of the truth. The apostle warns us of what we all already know but are reluctant to believe. That is, we can't take any of our money or possessions with us into eternity. That being the case, why would we devote ourselves to the vain pursuit of riches to the destruction of our soul?
