The Eighth Commandment Sermon 10 on the Ten Commandments Series
Exodus 20:15 – Thou shalt not steal.
I. Exposition The Hebrew word “steal” means, "To deceive". To carry away secretly. Our English word is similar. Stealth.
This commandment deals with who owns property and how it is acquired. We spend the majority of our waking hours dealing with these issues.
II. Applications of this Commandment in the O.T. Economy
1. Property rights were ordained and protected by God. Deut. 19:14
2. Do not be selfish with your property. Deut. 23:24-25; 24:21
3. Take as good care of your neighbor's property as you do your own. Deut. 22:1-3
4. Do not cheat men out of what they are due. Deut. 24:14-15
5. Do not cheat men by providing less than what they paid for. Deut. 25:13-16
III. The Application of This Commandment to all Men
A proper understanding of this commandment and a true desire to love our neighbor as ourselves would make more than half the laws in our country obsolete. Eph. 4:28
