The church correspondent writes: βWe thank the Lord for recent encouragements as several people have been coming regularly for the last two months on Sunday mornings. Please pray that these visitors may settle with us and for a work of the Lord among the members. John and Jean Ironmonger have both undergone operations recently with some benefit. More anti-vandal work rewiring work has been completed.β
For the Wider Area The Grace World View - Latvia After years of darkness as part of the Soviet Union, Latvia has emerged and advocates freedom of religion. Many opportunities for ministry exist, but the labourers are few. Latvia is a former Soviet republic located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. It shares borders with Estonia, Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania. Approximately 2.3 million people live in Latvia. Half of the people are native Latvians. There is also a large Russian group. After the Soviets gained control of Latvia, Stalin forced many Latvians to move to Russian and sent a corresponding number of Russians to Latvia. The tension between these two groups strongly influences events in Latvia. Since the communists fell, Latvia has pushed steadfastly forward with economic reform. The economy struggles but has grown over the last few years. Latvia has a strong industrial base and is looking to sell more goods to countries outside the former Soviet block. Latvia has been under the control of foreign powers for nearly all of its history. After a brief period of independence between World Wars I & II, Latvia was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. Independence came in 1991. Latvia still struggles over how to equitably treat the large Russian population. There is now freedom of religion. The Soviets brutally repressed Christians during their reign. Religious freedom is new to most Latvians. Most people are still struggling to find a moral compass. Protestant and Roman Catholic churches are approximately equal in size. The Eastern Orthodox Church is in rapid decline. There is still a large proportion of atheists. The Russians are more likely to be Eastern Orthodox or atheist. Few ministries are targeted at them. The people have shown more interest in religion since independence. However, most of the Christian churches, including evangelical ones, are nominal. Only about 2% of the people attend church regularly. Pray for pastors who faithfully preach the truth. Religious freedom has brought abundant opportunity to reach people with the gospel, but the workers are in short supply. Pray for the missionaries labouring in Latvia. There are too few Pastors. Pray for the training of more. Pray for ministries aimed to reach young people. Christians are allowed to conduct programs in the public schools but there are few Christians available to take advantage of this opportunity.
