For the Wider Area - Government decides to leave Sunday Trading Hours unchanged. July 7th Alistair Darling today announced that there would be no change in Sunday Trading Hours. Over 1000 submissions were received in the government's consultation process; a lengthy and expensive Cost-Benefit analysis was commissioned and a Sunday Shopping event was held in May to discuss that report. The report you want is entitled "The economic costs and benefits of easing Sunday shopping restrictions on large stores in England and Wales. Day One was involved in all stages of this consultation process. Everyone involved in the campaign was delighted at the news - it was seen as a wonderful and in many ways unexpected answer to prayer. We would like to thank everyone who prayed and who wrote to their MP and to government ministers. What was doubly encouraging was the weight of opinion within Parliament that was against any change - over 250 MPs had signed an early day motion calling for Sunday Trading Hours to be left as they are. This may well have had something to do with the government's reluctance to do something pro-active with regard to change; the parliamentary timetable was also very full and finding parliamentary time to get legislation through may have also proved difficult. The large retailers were understandably upset - Asda and others had wanted complete deregulation while Tesco had wanted just a few extra hours.
