For the Wider Area Hizbullah and the Middle East Conflict The Lebanese Shiβa Hizbullah was created by Iran in the 1980s to project its power in the Arab Sunni world at a time when most Sunni Arab states sided with Saddam Husseinβs Iraq in his long war against Iran (1980-1988). Hizbullah was also supported by Iranβs ally, Syria, as a useful proxy in its war against Israel. With help from Iran and Syria, Hizbullah developed to become the strongest Shiβa organisation in Lebanon, given a privileged status of maintaining its own armed militia and controlling its own territory when all other Lebanese militias were disarmed. Following Israelβs total withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Hizbullah continued to amass sophisticated weapons from Iran and Syria while its cadres were trained by Iranian Revolutionary Guards. It also developed an ideology of seeking the total destruction of the state of Israel as justification for its continued existence as a Liberation Movement. It thus allied itself to Palestinian Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who also do not accept Israelβs right of existence in any borders. These Islamic Palestinian groups reject the Oslo Accords (the peace treaty between Israel and the PLO) of 1993 and all subsequent agreements between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority, demanding the annihilation of the Jewish state. βHizbullahβ (more correctly Hizb Allah) is Arabic for βthe party of Godβ. In traditional Islam it's understood as the true Muslims who fight against the party of Satan. Ayatollah Khomeini popularised the term as he forged the Iranian Islamic Revolution, and it has been adopted by several Shiβa organisations not necessarily linked to the Lebanese Hizbullah. As an estimated hundred thousand Lebanese now flee the Israeli shelling, Christians form a substantial proportion of the refugees. Some have fled to the Lebanese mountains, while tens of thousands are crossing into Syria. Christians currently comprise about 30% of the Lebanese population. Although they formed a large majority a hundred years ago, emigration and the small size of Christian families mean that their proportion in the population is now greatly reduced. Please pray for all the victims of this violence, remembering especially our Christian brothers and sisters caught in a conflict not of their making. Pray for peace and justice in the Middle East.
