God’s grace in the heart saves, justifies, and cleanses. God’s grace in the heart also produces a sure growth in grace. That growth will be slow, but it will be certain- just like the growth of a tree. No matter how closely you watch the sapling, you cannot see it grow, but wait a few years and you will surely know that it has grown. Growth in grace is the same. We may get discouraged because growth is slow, but continue hearing the gospel, continue reading God’s Word, and continue in prayer, and in a few years you are sure to see God has given growth in grace.
A NEW HISTORY AND A NEW MAN
History cannot be changed or altered. Because of my history, if I were given forgiveness for my past sins, a clean slate and a new start, it would do me no good. I would mess it up (History repeats itself). What I need is a new history and a new man. While there is nothing new under the sun (Eccl. 1:8-10), there is One who is over the Sun. He said, “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev. 21:5). He gives us a new history (Justification) and a new man (Regeneration) who will not mess things up. Aren’t you thankful for Him who said, “Behold, I make all things new”?

Few persons are aware that one secret of being miserable is to live only for ourselves, and one secret of being happy is to try to make others happy.

Someone asked me recently if much of my time was spent in our children’s program. I replied that we do have a children’s program that includes Bible classes and worship services, but not a lot of organized social activities. I wanted to tell him that ALL of my time is spent in our children’s program, but I knew he would not understand that our adults and our children all have the same great need, which is Christ. Mary chose to sit at the feet of Christ who is that one thing needful (Luke 10:42). I want our adults and our children to have that same one thing needful. I do want our children to have social activities together so they know each other and have a relationship with each other, but our children NEED to know Christ and have a relationship with Christ or they will be eternally lost. Our children need an education to be able function in this life, but our children NEED to be taught Christ whom to know is life eternal. Our children need a job so they can provide things of this life for themselves, but our children NEED Christ who provides every spiritual blessing for His people. Our children need food to eat so they will have good nutrition and health, but our children NEED Christ who is the only bread of spiritual life. Our children need clothes to wear, but our children NEED Christ to be their robe of righteousness or they will perish without a covering in shame. Our children need a roof over their head to protect them from the elements, but our children NEED Christ to be their refuge and hiding place or they will perish in the storm of God’s wrath against their sin. Yes, there are many things our children need, but our “children’s program” (and our adult’s program) will always be Christ, the one person they NEED.
“Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortable to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for her sin” (Isaiah 40:1-2).
My desire is to comfort God’s people. It is also my desire to see the lost saved. Isn’t it amazing how the same message of Christ and Him crucified, both saves the lost and comforts God’s elect? There is only one way to be saved, there is only one way to be comforted and that is by the preaching of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
