Dear Praying Friends: Welcome from Menonomee Falls, Wisconsin. We arrived Saturday late afternoon after a 800 mile drive. We split up the distance, and stayed overnight in a motel last night between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. We will be here for two weeks and teaching a course in Advanced Missions.
To back up, two weeks ago we were in the prophet’s chamber at Faith Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C. Friday we spend our evening with Tabitha Champlin, Jonathan and Sherrie Champlin’s youngest daughter, who is a freshman at Bob Jones University. Not only did we eat together, but Tabitha gave us a tour of the campus. It had changed a lot since we were students there briefly before going to Suriname in 1986. Saturday, we ate a delicious lunch with the Terpenings, whom we met when they were attending Juniatta Baptist Church in Vassar, MI. They had had us stay overnight with them before even though they were heading for Togo, West Africa for a year the following day!
Sunday morning, we were at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Stacey Shiflett. He had been a missionary in South Africa for 5 years before taking over the church when the pastor retired and they contacted him to do so. We had a good time of fellowship and sharing, as well as sharing a delicious lunch. That afternoon, we drove to Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hickory, N.C. We enjoyed the church immensely, and especially our time of fellowship with Pastor Scott Hooks, who has been there for a few years after spending a number of years on staff at Temple Baptist Church under Dr. Clarence Sexton. We ate together at Cracker Barrel and he was very helpful to us.
We then drove to Ambassador Baptist Church for the week, arriving just before 11 pm. Dr. Norman Johnston is the very capable head of missions at the college, and graciously allowed us to give a number of lectures during the week. I spoke in 10 classes, and Liz spoke about the role of ladies in an additional class. We really enjoyed ourselves, especially with having some contact with both Seth and Caleb. Seth sat with us in the chapel services, and we were able to eat lunch with him a number of times. Caleb was with us several times as well, and we were able to take him out with his girl friend Kristen Bissell. Both boys have an incredible schedule, and are carrying over 19 credit hours this semester. Caleb is working over 30 hours in the food service at the college to help cover his expenses. Seth, who got engaged during the summer, is working over 40 hours a week at Chick-fil-A to cover school expenses and future anticipated expenses looking at marriage. His fiancé is working this year and lives in Pennsylvania.
We were also able to present our work and preach at Emmanuel Independent Baptist Church, where Dr. Charles Surrett is pastor. Dr. Surrett was the pastor of a baptist church in Dyer when we presented there on deputation in 1985. Seth attended there for 3 years, and now is helping in another church. Caleb is at Emmanuel for his second year. He helps with some musical accompaniment.
The only news I have from Suriname is that Kalow Palata is in Holland for two weeks. Family members in Holland arranged for him to come to surprise his younger brother on his 50th birthday.
