Thought For The Week:
Jesus said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God." Luke 9:20
Prayer For The Church:
Thank God for answered prayer in last weeks Holiday Bible Club with @ 50 children attending each day. There is a report of at least one young person being significantly blessed. Continue to pray that God will continue to bless the work, and refresh those who gave so willingly of their holiday time.
Pray also for the work done at Erith this past week.
Pray for the youth work as we begin again after a week's holiday, particularly that the Lord will lay His hand on some who would be a disturbing influence.
Please pray for Norman Gilbert as he travels to Kenya soon to take up a number of preaching engagements.
Pray for Joanna and John that they will know the presence of Christ next Saturday and throughout their marriage, to His glory. Pray that God's Word preached will bring life to those without hope.
Prayer For The Local Area:
Brighton (Montpelier Place) The church correspondent writes: ‘Please pray for our weekly outreach in our town center that we will be enabled to preach the gospel faithfully and that by the Sovereign work of the Spirit people will be converted and added to the church. Please pray for a number of people who have been under spiritual attack that the Lord will enable them to glorify Him in the dark providences that He sometimes leads His people into. Please pray for anointing upon the preaching and REVIVAL.'
Prayer For Wider Area:
New World Watch List has North Korea on top
2007 was a very difficult year for Christians in North Korea. According to Open Doors North Korean believers faced more persecution in 2007 than ever before. That's why North Korea is again atop their World Watch List, which rank countries by the amount of persecution Christians face as they practice their faith.
While North Korea has held this position before, President of Open Doors USA Carl Moeller says North Korea received 90 of the maximum 100 points given. "I think that's the high record we've ever had for a country," says Moeller.
Among other nations mentioned in the World Watch List are Islamic nations Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Maldives, occupying the second, third and fourth places on the list. Bhutan rose to 5th place. Somalia and Yemen are tied for 6th.
Afghanistan is also in the top 10 (7th place) especially because of what Open Doors described as "several incidents involving Christians" including the murder of two South Korean missionaries during a hostage drama last year.
The situation in Laos, Uzbekistan and China also remained serious. Eritrea, where an estimated 2,000 predominantly evangelical Christians have been jailed, received 11th place on Open Doors' WWL.
Other countries where Christians allegedly face increased persecution are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Jordan, Belarus and the Palestinian territories.
Open Doors said it included the Palestinian territories "for the first time" in the WWL following the murder in October of Christian bookshop manager Rami Ayyad by Muslim militants and related threats against other Christians.
Some countries, however, saw a "light" improvement, including Burma despite a recent bloody crackdown by the military government on pro-democracy demonstrators, Open Doors claimed. Ethiopia and Colombia also saw "improvements," while for the first time Nepal was no longer mentioned on the WWL of 50 nations.
Worldwide, some 200 million Christians suffer persecution for their faith, with another up to 400 million facing discrimination, Open Doors estimates. Moeller says Christians understand why this is happening. "The brothers and sisters around the world who are persecuted for their faith tell us that not only is it because they're witnessing for Jesus Christ, but because of the persecution, their faith has grown even stronger and their witness has grown even bolder. God uses that suffering in many ways to spread His church."
