CALL TO WORSHIP

I bless the Christ of God, I rest on love divine

And with unfaltering lip and heart, I call the Savior mine

His cross dispels each doubt, I bury in His tomb

Each thought of unbelief and fear, each lingering shade of gloom

I praise the God of peace, I trust His truth and might

He calls me His, I call Him mine, My God, my Joy, my Light

In Him is only good, in me is only ill

My ill but draws His goodness forth, and me He loveth still

‘Tis He Who saveth me, and freely pardon gives

I love because He loveth me, I live because He lives

My life with Him is hid, my death has passed away

My clouds have melted into light, my midnight into day.

(Tune: “This is My Father’s World” p. 39)

SALVATION IS NOT BY CHANCE

“As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” (Rom 9:13) Of course the apostle Paul knew men would think that it is not fair that God would hate Esau. Fallen man thinks it is not fair that Esau was not given the chance to make a choice to be saved. Paul’s response in verse 20 is, “Who do you think you are to dispute with God?”.

Rather than arguing with God, this verse should make us give thanks. We should give thanks that Jacob wasn’t given a chance to make a choice to be saved either. God just saved hell-deserving Jacob by His grace. Jacob did not have a say in the matter. Jacob knew that his salvation was all of grace without any works of his own.

Knowing that the Lord sovereignly saves whom He will never makes a believer fatalistic (think it doesn’t matter if we preach to or pray for the lost because God is going to save whom He will no matter what we do). Knowing that God is sovereign in salvation made Jacob pray that the same Savior who redeemed him would bless and redeem his grandchildren (Gen. 48:16).

WHO CAN CHARGE US?

Here is what every believer knows from the testimony of scripture and from the experience and conviction of his own heart (John 16:8- 11). We know, recognize and confess the problem and plague of our own heart, is sin (Rom. 3:9-12; 5:12). But thank God, we also know the solution for sin, Christ and Him crucified (1Cor. 2:2), Christ our propitiation for our sin (Rom. 3:25). Christ Jesus crucified (Rom. 4:25), the Substitute (2Cor.5:21), Surety (Heb.7:22), Satisfaction (1 John 4:10) and Saviour (Matt. 1:21) is our only answer to every just charge against us, “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” (Rom. 8:33-34).

DOGS

Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Matthew 15:25-27

My wife and I have a little dog. We love that little dog. That little dog serves no real purpose in life, she only desires to be the object of our affection. She begs for food. Sometimes she must be cleaned up after. She is totally dependent on us and without our constant care, she will die. She is somewhat a liability. Yet despite her liabilities, she brings us great joy. She is always glad to see us when we return from being away. She loves us dearly and desires to be with us every hour. In spite of all these endearing qualities, at the end of the day, she is still a dog. I think she enjoys being a dog. Many dogs in this world do not fare so well as our dog does.

From my perspective, being our dog is a wonderful privilege. We go to great lengths to make sure every need of our dog is provided. We see to it that she is treated with compassion and tender care. It seems that the quality of a dog’s life depends on who their master is. I rejoice greatly that I, the dog that I am, belong to that Master who constantly sees to it that I have all I need. My Master requires only one thing from me in return. What does He require of me? Nothing but my adoration and worship of Him. How wonderful and life sustaining it is to constantly eat of the crumbs that fall from His table. I like being my Master’s dog. Don’t you?

Pastor David Eddmenson

A most amazing statement! The sinless one was made to be sin. God made the perfectly innocent One to be sin for us. I bless His holy name and adore Him that He is not unjust in order to be merciful; that He does not spare the guilty in order to indulge His gentleness. Every transgression and disobedience has its just recompense of reward. I bless His holy name that to vindicate His justice, He determined that, while a free pardon should be provided for all believers, it should be grounded upon an atonement, which satisfied all the requirements of His holy law.
