INDIA - CHURCH ATTACKED BY HINDU EXTREMISTS
Around 150 Hindu extremists attacked a Christian church in Chhattisgarh, India on 19 November. They completely destroyed the church building, beat up the pastor and some members with hammers and iron rods and kidnapped 21-year old Aayatu, a member of the church, who was later found dead. The extremists warned the pastor against holding any more church services.
Despite being told the licence number of one of the extremist's vehicles and some of the attackers' names, the police waited until the next day to file a complaint. Fifteen people were arrested later that week, but the death of Aayatu was still not being investigated by the police.
DAUGHTER OF UK IMAM UNDER POLICE PROTECTION FOR CONVERTING TO CHRISTIANITY
The daughter of a British imam (leader of a mosque) has been taken under police protection after she received death threats from her family for converting to Christianity. She became a Christian after she ran away from home at the age of 16 to escape an arranged marriage. Since then, she has moved house 45 times to escape detection by her family. The latest threat against her life was a text message from her brother, warning her that he could not be responsible for his actions if she did not return to Islam.
According to Islamic law any adult male Muslim who leaves Islam must be killed as an apostate. A female apostate may be put to death or imprisoned, depending on the school of law applied. Earlier this year, a study found that 36% of British Muslims aged between 16 and 24 believed that those who converted from Islam to another religion should be punished by death.
ALGERIA - ATTEMPTED MURDER OF CHURCH LEADER PREVENTED
On 14 December, an attempted assassination of a senior church leader, who questioned the legitimacy of Islamic teachings and rituals in front of about 120 Christians, was foiled by the intervention of Algerian armed forces. Four armed men belonging to an Islamic militant group gathered on Friday night with the intention of killing the church leader. Algerian Christians, who are almost all converts from Islam, were wonderfully protected by the Lord during the bitter years of civil war in the late twentieth century. As pressure on Christians begins to increase again, it is good news that this assassination attempt failed.
