News from Barnabas Fund - Pastor in Uzbekistan sentenced to four years Pastor Dmitri (David) Shestakov is very active in ministry and particularly in sharing the Gospel with non-Christians. He has been found guilty of "incitement to religious hatred" and has been sentenced to four years' deportation to a prison colony. Pastor David will have ten days to appeal. Please continue praying for him. Pray that the Lord will intervene in the situation and that this faithful and courageous Christian will be allowed to go free. Thank Him that the most serious charge levelled against David – running an illegal religious organisation – was dropped. David had hoped that a third charge of "distributing materials promoting religious extremism" would also have been dropped as part of an amnesty in judicial processes to celebrate 15 years of Uzbek independence; however it appears that in the end this did not happen. Two similar court cases are also in progress in other parts of Uzbekistan. David’s case will probably set a precedent to be followed in these cases. Pray that the current wave of persecution against Christians in Uzbekistan will cease and that they will be allowed to worship together and share their faith without harassment or punishment from the authorities. PAKISTAN - CHURCH ALLOWED IN UNIVERSITY Permission has been given for the reconstruction of a church building in the campus of the University of Peshawar. The church had been attacked and ransacked in the mid 1980s, by Islamic extremists. After building work began in December 2006 two Muslim agriculture students filed a petition against the church. Chief Justice Tariq Pervez Khan gave the decision of the Peshawar High Court on 23rd January that the construction of the church should not be stopped. In his comments Khan said that there were no legal obstacles to building places of worship. He also pointed out that Pakistan's constitution protects religious minorities, and noted that Muslims can build mosques and spread their faith without obstruction in non-Muslim countries. "It has been a miracle indeed," commented the Bishop of Peshawar. There are 38 mosques on the University campus; the church, once rebuilt, will be the only church, serving 1,500 families.
