We were set on a firm foundation praying to our Father which art in Heaven. We approach the Almighty God as our Father. Then the petitions are divided as the law is- to God and in regards to us. We dealt with the name of God and saw that His names are His glory and we are called to glorify His name in EVERYTHING we say and do! Now we move to the 2nd petition as the glory of His name will be fully realized in heaven- His Kingdom!!!
There is much misconception about the Kingdom of God and we must define it. It is HIS Kingdom never to be construed with an EARTHLY kingdom in this veil of corruption. (“Peter...my Kingdom is NOT of this world!”) It is NOT earthly! (As He told Pilate.) It is NOT an earthly utopia. (Post millennialism.) The Kingdom is a SPIRITUAL realm and why we belong to that Kingdom. A Kingdom HE determined in Himself. In no sense do we pray for things to get better and better for His Kingdom...IT IS AND WILL BE REALIZED! No question!
If the Kingdom is a reality why then do we have to pray for it? The Kingdom is in reality...BUT the Kingdom is realized in history-His Story! (The heart and core of ALL of history.) We must desire to pattern ourselves as citizens and those that belong to that Kingdom. The core of this petition is the preservation of the Gospel (where He calls into light to populate Heaven and call to repentance and also that we can increase and live as citizens of that Kingdom in this veil of sin and death.) Preserve the Church! It is ALWAYS through the PREACHING of the GOSPEL that people are saved! It is thus a prayer for the Church for the preaching of the Gospel and a groaning for those within it to live sanctified. This is why the devil is so bent on attacking it! It is the VEHICLE. When the preaching is NOT pure or it is corrupted, the Holy Spirit withdraws Himself! The Church and preaching of the Gospel must be in the heart and life of the child of God. His desire and vision whereby he clings to it!
Psalm 137. Very powerful words! “If I forget Thee O Jerusalem let my right hand forget their cunning...if I do not remember Thee let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I not prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.”
