This is the 1st petition of the Lord's Prayer that applies to ourselves in the orderly, systematic order the Lord gave us. God's Glory was 1st and paramount and we pray first that He may be glorified in ALL things, especially and most importantly in our life and walk. It focus' on our need to be to God's glory (to be in and through us.) That puts this petition and all that follow in perspective. A very SPIRITUAL petition that has to do with our needs on the way to Glory. We are dependent on Him and must TRUST in Him!
The perspective is not carnal with the necessities of this life here below first and foremost. We do not make it carnal making the things of this earth the end all, but make these earthly needs SPIRITUAL! As Christ preached "don't be full of anxiety for carnal things BUT trust in the Lord to fulfill your needs." The devil wanted to separate Christ from His Church for carnal need and that is why Christ would not partake. (He did NOT say quit eating!) Never let those who quote scripture push you into believing it has nothing to do with earthly needs or ONLY earthly needs. It is a SPIRITUAL petition for our earthly needs. Things for body and soul (notice the order.)
It is amazing how the Lord has tied us to the earth. Look at the back of your vitamin bottle to see how it matches exactly what we need and have need of. James speaks about he child of God who in his exercise of faith knows his needs that we may walk a pilgrims journey to His glory. But we must NOT confuse the necessities with the end as our prayer would then be carnal. It is a petition that is subservient to the first petitions. DAILY bread!
We pray for bread and Christ uses it to talk about our DAILY necessities. The necessities of this life that we need in order to live to His Glory EVERY DAY onward to Glory! And the child of God knows as he is heavenly minded he cannot crowd out the heavenly and spiritual with the carnal. Zion is ALWAYS FIRST! And ALL our necessities to get from here to there belongs in our prayers! Our daily bread as each day we stand before our Father and live THAT DAY according to the necessities HE provides for us. Everyday we pray this prayer. Not the security of the future BUT the allotment we need for THAT DAY.....each day as they change from day to day. The needs of the day! We face our needs today for our daily bread and we will face it tomorrow!
Difficult to do in our affluence as we go shopping for the entire week that lies ahead. Know that God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. God ALONE! And without His blessing it can and will NOT profit anything. Not only to have it but for it to be useful. (Many times I have sat by a plate FULL of food next to the hospital bed of a child of God who could NOT eat it.) God gives for our every need and He alone.
