I don't know what the woman who anointed Jesus at Bethany looked like but I do know she was beautiful. Her beauty was that of her inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. It was full of submission and sacrifice, which did not give way to fear. A Christian woman does not put her hope in her husband or in getting a husband. She does not put her hope in her looks. She puts her hope in God and His precious promises. Mary broke her alabaster jar and poured the perfume on Jesus' head. John adds that she also "poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume" (John 12:3). She wasn't careful just to do a little. It was sacrificial worship. It cost her $55,000.00 in today's dollars! She poured out her future on the head of Jesus. She was giving up her security, her backup plan, a whole year's saving. True worship arises out of sacrificial love, not lukewarm profession. We are still preaching 2,000 years later about woman who gave it all for God. Mary was a spiritual beauty! "Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." (Proverbs 31:31)
