What do you want to be when you grow up? That is a question normally asked of children or teenagers as they contemplate graduation from High School. And the answers to the question usually focus on either career or accomplishments. But career and accomplishments are all 'above the surface'. What about below the surface, issues of character and the heart. What do you want to BE when you grow up. In this sermon, we meet an 85 year young man who is our role model for growing older-- Caleb. Caleb had an unshakeable faith in the power, promises, and presence of God in His life. God had promised him an inheritance in the land 45 years earlier-- and Caleb believed that one day he would enjoy that inheritance. Caleb also had an uncommon graciousness about himself. He could have become bitter, but instead he entrusted his life to God's plan and purposes. Caleb also had an indomitable spirit. His cry, 'Give me this mountain" signals that he has not given up, not ready to retire, but was up for the challenge God had for him. His unshakeable faith, uncommon graciousness, and indomitable spirit resulted in his positive spiritual impact on the next generation. He challenged them to have the same unshakeable faith and indomitable spirit as they too faced the challenges of life. That's the kind of person I want to be when I grow up! What about you? What do you want to be when you grow up?
