1 Peter 3:19-20 is one of the most difficult passages in all of Scripture to interpret, for Peter states that Jesus Christ, following his death on the cross and before his resurrection went and preached to the spirits in prison. Who are these spirits in prison? Where are these spirits housed? Why are they incarcerated? Why did Jesus preach to these incarcerated spirits? What was his message to them? And what difference does it make to you and I? I contend that these spirits are fallen angels, who according to Genesis 6 and Jude 6-7, left their proper abode, cohabited with the daughters of men, and produced the vile, sinful half-race of angels and men that were destroyed in the flood. it was Satan's attempt to pollute the human gene pool so that the incarnation of Jesus Christ would be impossible. But God's judgement of the universal flood wiped out this wicked generation, and the spirits were confined in Tartarus, the maximum security section of the abyss. Jesus went to preach not a message of salvation, but rather a message of triumph! Satan thought that he won at the cross with the death of Christ. But Satan's greatest triumph became his greatest defeat! While Satan bruised the heal of the Son of God, Jesus Christ crushed his head!! Jesus Christ WON!!! He's the victor! And for you and I, whom the world likes to paint as losers, we are on the winning side!! We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us!!!
