The most important question that one can ever ask is. 'What must I do to be saved?' What is necessary for salvation. And no clearer or simpler answer can be given then the one Paul gave to the Philippian jailor, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved!' But what part, if any, does water baptism play in our salvation? Does our baptism save us from sin-- either as an infant or as an adult? This sermon looks in-depth at the issue of infant baptism and adult baptism as a step in the process of our salvation, and concludes that baptism does not save us from sin. But it does save, not from sin, but from a soiled conscience. Water baptism is a public pledge we make that states we are no longer a part of the world, that there has been a decisive break with the past, and that it is our intentions on living for Jesus Christ in the present. We have now decided to follow Jesus Christ and there is no turning back! Water baptism declares both our allegiance and our alliances. We are committed to Christ and numbered with Christ's followers. In this way it 'saves' us from being numbered with the perverse generation in which we live and from compromising our faith when persecution arises. For us, there is no turning back!
