The Acts of... Christ the King (Acts 1:1-3) Intro: The acts of whom? Jesus the King is the Actor in the book of Acts.
Doctrine: The Theme of Acts: Christ the King is the Heavenly Actor in all that takes place by his Spirit & through his servants.
1. A survey of Christ's reign in Acts See the choice of Matthias (1:23), the baptism of the Spirit (2:30), the growth of the church (2:46), the healing of the lame beggar (3:6ff), the apostles' defense (4:7ff), the prayer meeting around Psalm 2 (4:24), etc.
2. King Jesus is the Actor & this is a book of his acts. The apostles are only important in the narrative according to the degree to which, at the moment, they are being used as servants of the King.
Application 1. What a view of Jesus' heavenly reign! Jesus is reigning & ruling from his throne at the father's right hand. That work is going on, & will go on, until the end: See 1Cor 15:24-25.
2. What a lesson about humility! 1Cor 3:5, cf Isa 10:15
3. What an encouragement about Christ's purpose in our lives! It is enough for us that we may be privileged merely to way a few precious gemstones in the wall of that great city, whose "builder and maker is God" (Heb 11:10).
Conclusion This is the reign of Christ, the mediatorial king of creation. And so let us dedicate ourselves afresh to his royal service, and pray that we might be privileged to be the mighty men of David, instruments in the hands of the King.
