The Power of the King (Psalm 2) Intro: Who is Jesus Christ? Mediator in Humiliation & Exaltation Acts 2:36, see Phil 2:8-11, Heb 10:12-13, 1Cor 15:25.
Review: The Acts of Christ the King We see Jesus reigning, ruling, & overruling to extend his kingdom & bring the gospel to all nations.
Doctrine (from M'Leod's book Messiah, closely following Ps 2) 1. Christ executes God's purposes for the nations (& in particular, for the prosperity of the church). Thus, Christ receives universal dominion for the Church (Eph 1:20-22, Dan 7:14, Col 1:16-20, 3:11, Rev 5:5, 9-10).
2. Christ opens a door among the nations for the introduction of his gospel. Though the kings & rulers are opposed to the reign of grace (Acts 4:26-28, 17:13-14), Christ opens a door that no man can shut (Rev 3:7-8, 2Cor 2;12, Acts 18:9-10, Mt 28:18-20).
3. Christ calls subjects of all nations into his kingdom. Rom 15:12; Rev 5:9-10; Ps 45:1-6; Heb 1:8, 10:5.
4. Christ commands earthly rulers how to conduct themselves with respect to his Church Ps 2:10-12; Is 49:22-23, 60:12,16; Ez 21:26-27
5. Christ over-rules the disobedience of governments, & makes all national acts serve to his own glory & the church's good. Nothing the nations do can stop the advance of the church (Acts 8:1-4 [actually, the whole book of Acts], Ps 47:9, etc.).
6. Christ punishes the powers of the earth for the neglect of their duty. Ps 110:5-6, Acts 12:1-22, Dan 4:37
