Why We Need A King (Psalm 110)
Intro: Prophet, Priest, and ... ?
"There is one God & one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (1Tim 2:5). How is Christ the Mediator?
"What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer? A. Christ, as our Redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation" (WSC 23)
But do we know what it means that Christ is a King?
1. The Kingship of Christ is an important doctrine in the word of God. Zech 9:9, Is 33:17, Mt 27:37, Rev 1:5, etc.
Our Redeemer "has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS" (Rev 19:16).
2. The Kingship of Christ is important to God's Purposes for us Ps 110:3
And so his work as Priest must be join to his work as King: Heb 10:12-13, cf 1:3.
3. The Kingship of Christ is important to God's Purposes for his Enemies
God's work has many enemies, enemies within (Rom 7:21), and enemies without (Jn 15:19, Eph 6:12). But the good news is that the Savior of God's people, is also the conqueror of their foes.
Conclusion: Davies' sermon on the Mediatorial Dominion
"Yes, my brethren, Jesus, the Prophet of Galilee, will push his conquests from country to country, until all nations submit to him." |
