Jesus forbade the using of oaths in our day to day living. There are however times when an oath is legitimate, as Paul shows here. Thus, you do not violate Christ's words when you swear in court to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. Paul's goal in what he did with respect to the Corinthians was not self-serving, but so that they might know true joy--he wanted to increase their joy. He did this by holding the truth before them without apology and calling on them to bow their wills to the Lord. In the light of this what are parents to be doing in order to increase their children's joy? Paul's point is that without godly character there can be no true Biblical joy. Joy has to do with obedience and obedience is a faith issue and each person is to stand firmly upon true faith laboring for the glory of God. Sin on the other hand impacts all of our relationships, not only our relationship with the Lord, but those with our family, church and society.
